Objective. Students will implement an update and backup plan for Windows and Linux systems using built-in tools, verifying backup integrity and documenting a maintenance schedule.
This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by an industry-certified professional or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.
VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.
A computer that is never updated and never backed up is a liability waiting to become a crisis. Operating system updates patch security vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and add stability improvements. Without them, systems are exposed to known exploits that attackers actively target. Backups ensure that when hardware fails, ransomware strikes, or a user accidentally deletes critical files, the organization can recover without losing significant data or productivity. For an IT support technician, building and following a maintenance schedule is a core professional responsibility.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 manage updates through Settings > Windows Update. From that screen you can check for updates manually, review update history, pause updates temporarily, and configure Active Hours — the window of time when Windows will not restart the machine automatically to apply updates. Setting Active Hours to match the business's working day (for example, 8 AM to 6 PM) prevents unexpected reboots during productive work time.
Updates are classified as quality updates (cumulative monthly patches, security fixes) and feature updates (larger semi-annual releases on Windows 10; annual on Windows 11). Always review update history after a patch cycle to confirm all updates installed successfully. A failed update shown in history often indicates a storage or compatibility issue that must be resolved before the next patch cycle.
Windows provides two built-in file-protection tools:
For a small office, connecting a USB drive and enabling File History provides an easy, automated file-level backup. After setup, always verify by restoring at least one file through the File History interface. A backup that has never been tested is not a reliable backup.
On Debian-based distributions such as Ubuntu, the APT (Advanced Package Tool) package manager handles updates in two steps:
1. `sudo apt update` — refreshes the local list of available packages from configured repositories. This does not install anything.
2. `sudo apt upgrade` — downloads and installs newer versions of all currently installed packages.
To review what changed in a specific package, use `apt changelog <package-name>` after the upgrade. Reading changelogs helps you understand what was patched and whether a reboot is required (kernel updates always require a reboot to take effect).
The `tar` command creates compressed archive files — a standard Linux backup method for directories. The typical command for a compressed backup of the home directory is:
```
sudo tar -czvf /tmp/home_backup.tar.gz /home
```
Flag meanings:
To verify the archive, extract it to a test location:
```
tar -tzvf /tmp/home_backup.tar.gz
```
The `-t` flag lists archive contents without extracting. To actually extract for a restore test:
```
tar -xzvf /tmp/home_backup.tar.gz -C /tmp/restore_test
```
Confirm the files are present and readable in `/tmp/restore_test`.
A written maintenance schedule removes guesswork and creates accountability. A sound schedule for a small office specifies:
Answer each question, then check it. Nothing is recorded; this is your own practice.

Does the school offer financial aid?
No. We don’t offer financial aid because we’re free. No, really: completely free.
Do you offer industry certification?
No. We are not certified yet, so we can’t offer that to students. What we do offer is knowledge and understanding of a trade.
Enroll first in the trade you’re interested in. You get your key, your program opens, and you begin studying.
