Behind the panel Carpenter · series A, What a Trade Is.
Carpentry is the oldest of the building trades that still works at full speed on every job site. The panel gives the trade in under 200 words; this reading gives it depth.
Rough carpenters build what the eye will never see: concrete formwork, wall framing, floor systems, roof trusses, blocking for everything the other trades will hang. Finish carpenters build what the eye sees every day: doors, casing, baseboard, cabinets, stairs. Most carpenters learn both and specialise later. On a high-rise, carpenters build the forms that shape every concrete column and slab, then strip them and fly them up to the next floor.
Studs at 16 or 24 inches on center. A 3-4-5 triangle to check a corner for square. Rise and run for stairs, where the building code sets the limits. Board feet for ordering lumber. A carpenter does geometry all day without calling it that.
Balloon framing, invented in Chicago in the 1830s, replaced heavy timber joinery with light, sawn lumber and cheap machine-cut nails; the platform framing used today followed. The pneumatic nailer and the portable circular saw turned days into hours. Engineered lumber, steel studs and prefabricated wall panels are changing it again.
The Carpentry program starts with the universal core (safety, math, communication), then layout, framing, roofing, stairs, finish work and formwork, and ends with a capstone structure built in the Student Yard (Gallery G11). Credentials prepared: NCCER Carpentry Levels 1–4 and OSHA 10.
Journeyman carpenter, formwork foreman, superintendent, estimator, building inspector, or owner of a small contracting firm. Many construction managers started with a hammer.

Does the school offer financial aid?
No. We don’t offer financial aid because we’re free. No, really: completely free.
Do you offer industry certification?
No. We are not certified yet, so we can’t offer that to students. What we do offer is knowledge and understanding of a trade.
Enroll first in the trade you’re interested in. You get your key, your program opens, and you begin studying.
